Recommended Equipment for Your Alaska Fishing Trip
We provide top of the line G-Loomis rods with Shimano spinning reels or Abu Garcia Bait Casters. We also have a small supply of G-Loomis fly rods and reels for the fisherman who would like to learn to fly fish. For those fishermen who may want to bring their favorite rod and reel, below is a list of recommended fishing equipment.
You are allowed to bring up to 40 lbs. of gear per person.
We recommend you bring your own fly fish equipment.
If you choose to bring your own gear, we recommend the following:
Spin Fish Equipment
- Rods – 7 to 8 foot Medium Weight (small salmon, meaning silvers, Chums, sockeye), 7 to 8 foot Medium Weight (King Salmon)
- Line – We recommend Power Pro (20# small salmon) (80# King Salmon)
- Swivels – Good quality barrel & snap swivels
- Leader – 12# to 50# Maxima
- Hooks – We use Gamakatsu Octopus Red, #4 to 1/0 (small salmon), #4/0 to 6/0 (Kings), #8 to #6 (Rainbow Trout)
- Lures – #3 to #5 Mepps & Vibrax, K-13 Kwik Fish (small salmon), #5 to #6 Vibrax & 7/8 oz. spoons, K-16 Kwik Fish, Magnum Wiggle Warts (kings), #0 to #2 Vibrax & Memps, Panther Martin Spinner (Trout & Grayling)
Fly Fish Equipment for Salmon
- Rods – 8 to 9 foot 7-8 Weight (silvers, chums, pinks, sockeyes), 8 to 9 foot – 9-10 Weight (Kings), 9 foot 4-7 Weight (Trout & Grayling)
- Reel – King reels should have a mechanical drag system with 150-200 yards of 30# backing
- Line – Weight forward floating or 10-13 Type II or Type III Sink Tips
- Leader – Short 25# Mono (Kings)7 to 10 foot tapered (small salmon & trout)
- Flies – All Salmon Black & purple egg sucking leech, egg patterns, flash Flies
Late Season Coho - Coho streamers & pink Pollywogs
Sockeye – very sparsely tied weighted flies on #2 to #6 hooks
King Salmon – Medium sized #2 black Nymphs & Crazy Charlie. Bonefish flies have worked well
Rainbow Trout & Grayling
Early Season – Sizes 6-14 smolt patterns, black gnat, elk hair caddis, mosquito, gold ribbed hares ear
Mid Season – Size 6-10 elk hair caddis, prince nymphs, gold Ribbed hares ear, bitch creek, wool head sculpins, egg patterns
Late Season – Size 6-10 egg patterns, flesh flies (white to cream Colored with egg head work best) & small mouse patterns
