Winter at Alaska’s Northwoods Lodge

You can fly to Northwoods via ski plane or snowmachine up the Susitna and Yentna Rivers to enjoy some favorite winter sports; cross country skiing, snowmachining (we do not provide the snow machines), ice fishing and Iditarod race viewing.

See what the northern lights really look like far from city lights. Our remote location is a perfect place to view the Aurora Borealis from your cabin porch or while you enjoy our cross-country ski trails.

Iditarod Dog Sled Race

A premier experience for the adventurer. Either by aircraft or snowmobile, follow the adventuresome Iditarod mushers as they travel from Willow to Finger Lake and beyond. Experience breathtaking views of Mt. McKinley. Meet the local bush community of Skwentna at our annual Iditarod Bon Fire. The annual Iditarod Dog Sled Race takes place the first weekend in March.

A Snowmachiner’s Paradise

Alaskan Vocabulary Tip: Snowmachine – what the Lower 48 calls “snowmobile”. Fast, fun – great way to enjoy a winter day!

Since we live at the lodge year round, we welcome guests all winter. Cabins, meals, beer and wine, a heated shop for snowmachine repairs and gas are all available for those who wish to experience the thrill of speed on our river super highway by snowmobile. We are located 55 miles from the popular snowmachine start point, the Deshka Landing. Look for our sign on the river just 3 miles past Lake Creek on the Yentna River.

Tyson Johnson, son of Eric & Shan Johnson, the Northwoods Lodge owners, is a veteran snowmobile racer. Visit the official Iron Dog Website. This race starts in February every year.
